Revision 2: October 2000


The hardware started out with two 4U rack mount cases which I moved existing hardware into. 

Server 1

Name: caw2kadv1 (short for Campbell & Associates Windows 2000 Advanced Server Number One)
PIII-700, 256Mb RAM
20Gb IDE hard drive, IDE DVD
This computer connects to a 4U external drive chassis with mounts for eight 1.6" height 3.5" drives. In this incarnation it has 2-80Gb Maxtor drives mounted in drive caddies for a total of 156Gb (formatted) capacity. Fully loaded it should hold 624Gb of drive space (because everyone needs in excess of half a terabyte at home). To connect this many devices, an ASUS CUBX-E motherboard with 4 IDE connectors was used, providing a total of eight IDE drives.
Duties: Domain controller & file server. 

Server 2

PIII-500, 256Mb RAM
20Gb IDE hard drive, IDE DVD
Duties: Web server & SQL server.
I happened to have this Slot 1 style motherboard hanging around, so I threw it in a case.

Since everything in the rack was intended to be black, I had to locate black floppy and DVD drives - this proved surprisingly hard. Most vendors don't mention color (which means its white/ivory/beige). It was the home theatre PC industry that came to the rescue.

Each server has its own APC 1U 450VA UPS. The UPS is wired to the server so that it can signal a power failure and allow logging of power events and elegant shutdown when the batteries run low.

The 3Com DSL modem and Terayon cable modem, along with two LinkSys routers (one for each modem) were placed on top of the rack mount computers and provided both routing and networking connectivity (four RJ45s in each router) for the network. There was no attempt made to load balance or fail over between the two Internet connections.

Problems with this revision:

Naming scheme sucked. Find something less institutional.
Need proper networking hardware.
Wires to the patch panel were run incorrectly, making it impossible to use the bottom 1U space.
UPS was placed underneath the machine, making it difficult to mount (1U devices are hard to align) and difficult to wire (the UPS is much smaller than the computer, its hard to get at the plugs.
No wiring management system means there's wires everywhere already - and the rack is only 15Us (of 45) filled!
